How to Create A Vision Board that Keeps You Inspired

That is it! You are drawing your line in the sand right here, right now. From here on out, you will not live one more day feeling mediocre about your life choices. It’s time to stop living passively and get on with the good stuff already!

It's a new year and there is no better time to get started than TODAY!

Your best life is (lovingly) waiting for you to finally kick it in gear and start working to become the person you need to be in order to be ready for your best life. Be honest with yourself. Is the person you are right now even CAPABLE of handling everything your best life will bring for you?

What time does your best self wake up in the morning? How many hours does your best self spend scrolling though Instagram every day? What kind of choices does your best self make about food or spending money? What other habits does your best self have or not have?

PLEASE actually take out a pen and paper and write down a description of your best self, right now. Or even better, send it to me in an email if you need that accountability!

You have the opportunity, no, the POWER(!), to make choices every day that will transform you from the person you are now to the person you need to be. Your vision of your best self should be at the forefront of every decision you make.

Ordinary People believe only in the possible. Extraordinary people visualize not what is possible or probable, but rather what is impossible. And by visualizing the impossible, the begin to see it as possible. – Cherie Carter-Scott

If you’ve read this far then I know you’re ready to make the change in your daily life. It’s time to create a vision board to serve as your daily reminder about who you are striving to become.

What is Visualization?

Visualization is daydreaming with a purpose. – Bo Bennett

Visualization is imagining yourself having or achieving exactly what you want to manifest into your life. See yourself living the life you dream of. What does it feel like to be in your best life? Who and what are you surrounded by?

By practicing visualization daily, you shift your focus onto your future. Your mind will be filled with the exciting possibilities and opportunities that life will offer to you if only you become the person who is deserving of it.

Visualizing your best self should motivate you each day do the things the current version of yourself doesn’t want to do, provide direction for your daily actions, and even excite you to your core to try a little harder and become a little better.

What Is a Vision Board?

Hold a picture of yourself long and steadily enough in your mind’s eye, and you will be drawn toward it. – Napoleon Hill

Vision boards can take many shapes but the main purpose it to get your goals out of your head and onto paper (or a screen) so you can see them all in one place. It is a culmination of photos, quotes, words, and even objects that elicit a powerful emotional response. Whatever you need to feel inspired to reach your best life. There are no wrong answers here!

What Should I Put on My Vision Board?

To answer this question, you first need to clearly define what you want out of life.

  1. Focus first on who you are in your best life. This is who you’re devoting your life to becoming. I envision myself as a wife, mother, successful entrepreneur, writer, potter, and J Lo with a rockin bod at age 50 (?!?!).

  2. Next, focus on how you want to feel. What is your best self’s headspace like? What health and wellness goals can you set for yourself? I’ve represented how I want to feel with the word equanimity so I can draw in mental calmness and composure. I’ve also included a picture of my future family to represent my feelings of love and being loved. My best self is happy, creative, and has a strong sense of accomplishment. AND J Lo’s rockin bod at age 50 (?!?!) and I imagine that has to feel great!

  3. Then, ask yourself how you’d like to illustrate your professional goals in some way. This can be in the form of a specific career or title, maybe an award, or more generally in how you’ll feel when you’ve accomplished this. For me, my professional goals are most strongly represented by how I’ll feel seeing myself on the cover of a magazine, seeing a “Best Selling” sticker on a book I’ve written, or pulling up to my lavish house in a luxury car. I’m still searching for what I want to be when I grow up and that’s okay! As long as I know the direction I’m headed and who I need to become to get there, I’ll be good! Your specific career choice is less important than your path to becoming the person you need to be to get there.

  4. Lastly, allow yourself to indulge on material objects or vacations you’ve always dreamed of. I added my dream car, a Mercedes G-Wagon, and my spouse’s dream car. My huge dream house and my own pottery studio probably also fall under this category.

Do Vision Boards Work?

If you’re stills skeptical, or if you’ve tried to make a vision board before and it didn’t work, you’re probably wondering… Yeah, okay, Alexi… but are vision boards even effective?? The answer is only if you choose for it to be!

That’s right. You are in total control over whether or not your vision board works.

Make the choice, right now. Decide to look at your vision board and daydream about your future for at least 5 minutes a day. Maybe less if you’re in a hurry that day, but no matter what, you HAVE to commit to looking at and immersing yourself in you vision board EVERY DAY.

How to Create a Vision Board?

There is no wrong way to create a vision board. You have to do what works for you. Here are a few ways that you can create a vision board and why they may or may not work for you.

Traditional Vision Board

This is the iconic magazine-clippings vision board. They have a cool aesthetic and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a craft project for self-improvement? Plus having a physical board in your room to stare at has to count for something.

The biggest drawbacks for me is that (a) I didn’t already have a bunch of magazines laying around, (b) I didn’t want to spend a load of money to buy new magazines, and (c) I didn’t want to spend the time flipping through to find pictures that (maybe) align with what I’m looking for.

Pinterest Vision Board

I think creating a vision board on Pinterest is a great idea. It will be kept neatly organized and you can add or subtract any time you’d like when your goals change.

The reason I didn’t go this route is I’m worried that giving myself a reason to open the Pinterest app everyday would likely result in my spending too much time scrolling through Pinterest, and my best self doesn’t do that!

Digital Vision Board

Ahhh, this is the choice that was juuuust right for me. After I had clearly defined what my best life looks like, I set out to finding pictures that perfectly illustrated this for me. I created a digital vision board on Canva for FREE by just slapping my photos onto a blank template.

I might decide to print out my vision board later, but for now I love opening my laptop and staring at my creation every morning to start off my day.

Vision Board Examples

There are loads of vision board examples available on the internet. Just a quick google search or search on Pinterest will return thousands of inspiring boards. With that said, I don’t think that all of them are focused in on actually becomingyour future self. Risking my own embarrassment, I’ll share my vision board with you in hopes that you can be inspired to find your own best self, too.
